Books

Something that the four films i have chosen have in common is that two of the films have been a book first before they were made into the film. Twilight and Let the right one in. Let the right one in was written in 2004 a vampire fiction novel written by a swedish writer John Ajvide Lindqvist. Also another similarity of the two films are that both are centered by relationships. In twilight the relationship between Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. And in Let the right one in the film in centered around a young boy, Oskar and his relationship with a 200 year old vampire child, Eli. Let the right one in shows how Eli the little vampire girl helps Oskar to beat his bullies at school.

Added Film

I am going to add a fourth film to my project, 'Let the right one in' as the main character within this film the little girl is a vampire.

FS 4 Exercise

The area i have chosen to focus on for my research project is Genre, and the role of female characters within vampire movies. I am going to focus on three films, the first being Twilight: (2008) directed by Cathrine Hardwick. The second is Blade:trinity (2004) Directed by David S. Goyer. Because the female characters in blade are strong and powerful. The third film i have chosen is Underworld (2003) directed by Len Wiseman. From these three films i aim to discuss the roles of the different female characters within the films, and how they have changed over time from each of the three films. This topic interests me because in films such as Dracula (1931) directed by Tod Browning, the role of the female in the film was to stand and look pretty and not really have an acting role within the film, were as in the three films i am focusing on the role of the female characters are the staring role and shows female characters to be powerful and share some of the same qualities as males within the films. I have already read the books for the Twilight saga, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn for my secondary reseach although i am only going to be focusing on Twilight. The books show the female characters to be independant, and powerful, as each of them has a special power, apart from Bella but even her character is represented to be strong and independant. Something that all three films have in common is the saga theme, each film is part of a sequel. Some history of the role of females was found from this website http://altvampyres.com/femalesf.html which shows that the womens role in vampire films are very important, and have been for many years. From this project i hope to show a better understanding of how important the role of the female characters are in vampire films and how they have changed over time, and what they would be like without there roles within the films. Websites such as http://snarkerati.com/movie-news/top-70-vampire-movies-of-all-time/ show how many of the top vampire movies have an important female character, and even if the female isnt a vampire the character is still a major part within the film orweather its the male characters obsession with her. in the following post i will upload footage from YouTube from the films i'm baseing my project on.
